Daylight Savings Time: Manual change

All Safe Systems customers should manually update the time on their alarm/access control systems in advance of March 11. Since Daylight Savings Time is a "Spring Forward" event, set the time to be one hour ahead!

There are many potential issues you might face if you do not set the time on your system properly. Below are some of these issues:

Access Control Systems*
  • Doors opening early
  • Doors closing early
  • Access denial due to schedules for some employee groups
  • Inaccurate event reports
CCTV Systems
  • Inaccurate time stamps on video images of actual events. This could become a larger problem if the videos need to be submitted as evidence in court.
  • Inaccurate recording times due to schedules being off of sync with clocks. Event data could potentially be lost.
Security Systems
Inaccurate time stamps the system’s recording of actual events. This could become a larger problem if the events need to be submitted as evidence in court. Inaccurate recording times due to schedules being off of sync with clocks. Event data could potentially be lost.

If you are unsure what system type you have, or if you need any help changing your time please call us at 303-444-1191.

To change the time on your windows computer, simply “right click” on the time display in the system tray, followed by clicking on "Adjust Date/Time".
If you are running an obsolete version of Windows, even if it has been kept updated with Microsoft patches, your system may automatically be defaulted to make time changes on the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October as in previous years. On these systems, you will need to manually adjust the time again in April, October and once again in November when Daylight Savings Time ends.

You will need to continually change the date FOUR times per year unless you upgrade your software to a currently supported version of the windows operating system software. Additional information on preparing for the Daylight Savings Time change can be found on this Microsoft Support link: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/dst_topissues#A5.

*For specific access control systems
Northern N-750 and Silent Knight 4821
The DST dates are hard coded into these panels. On these panels the user must update the time manually at any full size keypad by entering in:
  • 1 ENTER Any Code,
  • select 1 to set time,
  • enter 2 digits in 24 hour format (ex. 5p.m. = 17) then press Enter,
  • enter 2 digits for the minute and press Enter.
  • Press Mute to exit.
*You should call the Safe Systems Programming department to have the DST option removed from you system, otherwise you will have to change it twice at each DST shift, the first for the “new” date, and then back again after the “old” date has shifted the time again. In this current case once for 3/11/07 and again for 4/1/07.
