Selecting the Right Security Alarm Provider

Evaluating and choosing the right security system to protect your business shouldn't be intimidating. Follow these 7 tips to compare providers and make a smart decision. Remember that not all alarm companies are the same; there are some important questions to ask.

Getting Started

Plan a visit
Will your alarm be monitored by trained specialists around the block? Or around the world? Plan a visit to the local monitoring center, request demonstrations, ask questions, and set high standards. The strongest providers welcome clients' scrutiny because it allows them to separate themselves from competitors.

Ask for references
See who some of their clients are. Visit an installation, ask questions. Is the installation neat and clean? In what condition was the home or business left after the installation?

Check certifications and accreditations
Is the company UL Listed? (Your insurance company may require this.) Are they licensed to install multiple system types? Are they members of industry standards bodies such as the Central Station Alarm Association, the National Fire Protection Association, Security Network of America, or local organizations?

Demand broad technological expertise
New technology allows an array of systems to work together to protect your business. Can they provide a full array of security? For example if you need a fire alarm, access control, security or CCTV, can one vendor provide it all?

Expect customized designs and complete plans
Your security needs, your premises, and your business are unique. Expect a trained consultant to work with you—in person—to design a security system specifically for you.

Insist on formal training
The best security companies won't wait for you to ask for system training. Comprehensive training helps to reduce false activations and ensures that your security system provides the best possible protection.
